About Edge of Chaos
Conveying vastness and majesty, Edge of Chaos was created for the Art of the Cosmos Exhibition, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope. The celestial objects in this piece are inspired by photos from the Hubble, including spiral galaxies, nebulas, and star clusters. On closer inspection, unexpected curiosities arise in the patterns of color creating brilliant visual forms. At 10 feet by 8 feet, Lorenz spent over a year designing, dyeing fabric, piecing and quilting the work. Her goal was to create a feeling of vastness and majesty. The lower edge, containing a city, mountains, and forest, counters the enormity and mystery of the sky and hopefully inspires wonder and awe in the viewer.
The puzzle design for The Edge of Chaos is rooted in wonder and playful discovery. Because the puzzle’s artwork was inspired by images from the Hubble Space Telescope, we placed a telescope whimsey piece in the center. Whimsey pieces of certain galaxies draw directly on Lorenz’s particular artistic style. As you assemble the puzzle, look for Laika, the first dog in space, a curious alien spacecraft, astronauts on a spacewalk, certain notable constellations...
